Buenos Aires
How to have fun in the rain
Country Number 3 on our big adventure
Argentina here we come!
11/10/2018: Day 1
This morning we caught the boat from Colonia del Sacremento, Uruguay to Buenos Aires, Argentina. The boat only took an hour and a bit which is just insane as you cant even get to some of the Islands in the Hauraki Gulf in an hour, you cant even get between the North and South Island in an hour, let alone to a new country!
We did a bit of exploring in Buenos Aires this afternoon but the cobble stones in Colonia del Sacremento were not good for our feet and we have aggrevated some old injuries. So after a couple of hours hobbling around Plaza de Mayo we decided to spend the rest of the afternoon in bed and heal. Tomorrow we will start exploring Buenos Aires for proper.
12/10/2018: Day 2
Today we are doing another Free Walking Tour, this time of Recoleta - the posh part of town. We started at 10.30am and walked from Teatro Colón down Av. 9 de Julio to The Big Ben of South America and Plaza San Martín. We learnt all about the Aristocratic families of Recoleta and the Palaces they built in the 20th Century, San Martín & Independence war, Terrorist Attacks, Malvinas/Falklands War, The Posh Buenos Aires, Fanciest Avenue in Buenos Aires and Colonial Franciscan Convent. We finished the tour at the Recoleta Cemetery where we got to see the graves of many interesting people including Eva Peron. The tour was great, we learnt so much about the history and the culture of Argentina, and Buenos Aires. I would highly recommend to anyone heading to Buenos Aires.
After the tour we went to the MALBA (Museo de Arte Latinoamericano) where we got to see some amazing 20th Century Latin American artists including Frida Kahlo. We also discovered the most amazing artist who I am now completely in love with called Xul Solar, an Argentinean born Contemporary Artist. He has his own art gallery here in Buenos Aires where we will be going tomorrow!
We finished off the day in Palermo. By that point it was raining pretty hard so we found a lovely cafe to shelter in for some coffees and wedges.
13/10/2018: Day 3
Today we are going on a bit of a tikki-tour. Starting with San Telmo, then heading over to Palermo to go to the Xul Solar Gallery, before heading back down to Plaza de Mayo. Thank God for Uber!
We started the day walking to San Telmo. San Telmo is a very cool place. We were there a bit too early for it to be in full swing but the covered markets are fantastic. There is a lot of food, shops and interesting things to look at. We particularily liked the Dulche de Leche store, I tried a lot of samples before Louise dragged me out of the store.
We then headed to my favourite part of Buenos Aires so far, the Xul Solar Gallery. I just loved it there. The art was amazing and the building that housed was just as fantastic.
We then walked all the way from the Gallery to Plaza de Mayo, past the Federal Government Office and then all the way down Av. de Mayo.
We had a fantastic last day in Buenos Aires, next stop the Iguazu Falls!
